The plastic straw you use to leisurely sip on your drink can turn into a sword for an unassuming animal. Taking up to 200 years to decompose! In the guise of micro-plastic, it spells death for many. In India, recently 80 kgs of plastic was removed from a single cow. What we are thoughtlessly consuming is ruthlessly killing all kinds of species.
According to global estimates plastic kill’s 1 million sea birds and up to 100,000 marine life creatures each year.
Convenience or simply a hidden conspiracy?
Plastic is indispensable to modern life and the pollution it causes is inescapable. Let’s reduce our carbon footprint by refusing single-use of plastic, recycling the plastic we possess and reducing daily consumption. A commitment and a crusade all at once!
REFUSING –
- Start with carrying a grocery bag to the supermarket.
- At restaurants carry your own cutlery to avoid throwaway plastic containers.
- Refill and reuse your water bottle daily.
- Avoid plastic and switch to bamboo straws & toothbrushes.
- Compel manufactures to reduce plastic packaging by returning containers constantly. Purchase loose grains & produce sold free of packaging.
- Avoid face scrubs and toothpaste with microbeads which are tiny plastic balls that seep into water systems.
- Collect litter during beach visits and street walks and play eco-warrior.
RECYCLE/REUSE-
- Keep reusing plastic bag, cups bottles & other items instead of tossing them.
- You can also reuse these items at home in creative & artistic ways.
- Plastic containers can potentially become sleeping bags, bottles, tote bags, furniture once recycled.
REDUCE –
- Invest reusable cutlery for yourself & home as possible.
- Buy in bulk & use reusable produce bags for groceries.
- Give composting at home or in the backyard at try.
Small changes can make a difference. Together, let us make our oceans plastic-free!
